Defense & Security

Machine vision is a key player when looking at defense and security industries. In production processes, computer vision systems ensure that military equipment such as weapons, vehicles, and electronics are manufactured with high precision and have the capability to automatically inspect components during assembly to detect defects or deficiencies that could compromise safety and effectiveness. In quality assurance, computer vision provides continuous monitoring, ensuring that all products meet the most stringent military standards by analyzing every detail, from material reliability to assembly accuracy. Furthermore, in personnel training, computer vision can create realistic simulation environments by tracking and analyzing trainees’ movements in real-time and imaging the training environment while providing immediate feedback. All these factors enhance the effectiveness of training programs and contribute to the preparation of more skilled personnel through more effective and realistic training scenarios.

Modular training box

The Need

The client is a former IDF officer specialized in combat simulations generation and arms training systems. He originated the idea to create a portable multifunctional unit for training and calibration of small arms. In addition, the production cost of the unit needed to be low so that it can be marketed to the private sector (mainly in the U.S.).

The Challenge

  • Handling different and varying lighting conditions.
  • Create the ability to accurately detect hits made using different marking methods.
  • Real-time hit detection and reporting to the user.
  • Implementation on a low-budget embedded platform with low power consumption.

The Solution

Design and development of a unit that supports indoor and outdoor shooting ranges. Our optical design that includes dynamic filters managed to cope with different light and weather conditions. The unit can detect hits from both laser and live fire on real targets, simulation videos and animations. The unit designed electronically to consume low power so it can stay active for many hours. The communication with the unit is done by a dedicated mobile application and there is an option to connect to other units in the network for mutual training sessions. The unit also stores the user historical statistics and can calibrate any weapon quickly.

Ammunition tester - automatic ammunition sorting and verification

The Need

During various training exercises across multiple armed forces, significant amounts of ammunition residue are generated and subsequently collected at sorting centers. The collected waste includes all types of calibers and markings, live bullets and empty shells, usable and disqualified ammunition. The ammunition waste needs to be sorted for melting, demolition or reuse for training according to caliber and mark. There are numerous ammunition boxes to sort every year. An automated procedure is required to cope with vast quantities.

The Challenge

  • Design multiple inspection stations and synchronize between them.
  • Implement rapid inspection algorithms at each station.
  • Handle ammunition that has already been in the field and has many defects in geometry, color, size and location.
  • Identify several types of ammunition according to predefined properties.

The Solution

Design and development of a complex sorting machine based on visual inspections of the ammunition. The first stage is separating the empty shells with used primer for melting. The other ammunition is then sorted by caliber. The second stage is a strict verification process of the remaining  ammunition. The process consist of three optical inspection stations checking for metal corrosion, sub millimeter physical defects, cracks, primer problems and other bullets defects. At the end of the verification, only qualified bullets remain and are sorted in segments according to caliber and marking. The machines can process 120 items per minute, requiring minimum maintenance and only one operator.
